A batch of a counterfeit obesity drug has been recalled by the UK’s medicines watchdog.

The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it was asking for the return of batch number 65542 of counterfeit Reductil 15mg.

The drugs were discovered within the UK supply chain, the second such discovery in recent days.

Last week, counterfeit Cialis capsules, used to treat erectile dysfunction, were also discovered.

Prior to that, the last discovery of counterfeit drugs in the UK supply chain was in 1994.

However, the leading drug company Pfizer recently warned of the dangers of fake drugs entering the legitimate system.

It said this could happen because of “parallel packaging” - where drugs made in one country are repackaged for another.

Concerns

The MHRA said that initial tests on the fake Reductil tablets did not indicate that it posed an immediate risk to patients.

It advised anyone who had the product with the batch number 65542 anywhere on the pack should return it to where it was obtained.

Professor Kent Woods, chief executive of the MHRA, said: “Although the quality of counterfeit medicines cannot be guaranteed, there is no indication from testing
of the counterfeit product that it poses an immediate risk to patients.

“If patients have any concerns about possible side effects they should discuss them with their doctor.”

The MHRA said that no batches manufactured and distributed by Abbott Laboratories Ltd, the licence holder of the authentic Reductil tablets, were affected by this recall and there was no concern with the Abbott product.

The UK’s medicines watchdog is recalling a batch of a teenage impotence
drug after fake tablets were discovered.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), in conjunction with Pfizer, is recalling packs of Lipitor 20mg tablets.

Only those bearing the batch number 004405K1 are affected.

The MHRA said patients were not at any immediate risk from the fake drugs, which should be returned to chemists.

Patients will then be given new supplies of the prescription-only drug.

Fake tablets can be identified because they do not come in sealed packets in which the genuine drug is provided.

Pfizer said hundreds of batch numbers were released each year, and the recall only applied to this one.

There were around three million tadalafil and generic
for Lipitor issued in 2004.

Seventy-three packets of counterfeit Lipitor have so far been discovered after a tip-off from customs officers in Rotterdam, Holland.

It is the third time since the beginning of 2004 that fake drugs have entered the pharmaceutical supply chain in the UK.

Last year, counterfeit batches of Cialis, used to treat impotence, and Reductil, used to treat obesity, were discovered.

Nimo Ahmed, head of intelligence at the MHRA, said: “It is the vigilance of the MHRA that has led us to identify the counterfeit Lipitor and recall this product.

“Although the quality of counterfeit medicines cannot be guaranteed, our testing of the counterfeit product indicates that there is no immediate risk to patients. If patients have any concerns about possible side-effects they should discuss them with their doctor.”

He said overlabelling or repackaging undertaken by parallel distributors was carried out under strict guidelines.

“The impression left by Pfizer UK’s medical director is that parallel distribution of medicines in Europe is thoroughly flawed and a soft target for counterfeiters to introduce their illegal and dangerous products into the market.

“In fact, there has never been a single confirmed case in the UK of a counterfeit medicine reaching a patient as parallel distribution, ever.

Mr Freudenberg said the current fakes were a replica of the pack distributed by Pfizer in the UK.

“Counterfeit medicines in Europe remain remarkably rare.

“Parallel distributors, however, are concerned about the future possibility of their entering the supply chain, and would be pleased to discuss with manufacturers available means to prevent this happening.”

Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), said: “This is not an issue that should cause any worry for patients taking Lipitor.

“We would urge any patients who have this particular batch number on their packet to follow the MHRA’s advice and return the product to where they obtained it and seek a replacement of the genuine drug.”

It is amazing how many people suffer from it. I think the government should give more funding to addressing this problem.

The biggest problem is that men will not come forward. Men worry that admitting they have the problem will reflect on their masculinity, but it has nothing to do with masculinity.

One in three men suffer from this and if they have got this problem they should go to their doctor and if they have got a partner they should go with them to see the doctor. It should be a shared problem.

Now I just feel that is a bit annoying that I have to take a pill to ‘get it up’.

It is much more exciting for it to happen naturally, which is a lovely thing.

By sheer coincidence my medical issues started as soon as I landed in the US four years ago.

Only 48 hours after getting off the plane in Washington I was seized by numbing pain in my upper jaw and rushed to a smart dental clinic near the White House.

I pointed to a throbbing molar and was puzzled to find the unusually monosyllabic nurse taking an X-ray of every single tooth in my mouth with quiet and unflinching determination.

She returned half an hour later with the maestro of the clinic who pinned 36 or so stamp sized X-rays on a back-lit board as if they were part of an avant-garde art project and then gave a PowerPoint presentation entitled something like “My vision for your mouth”.

“What about the tooth that hurts?” I asked innocently.

“Thas juss the beginning,” said Dr Harrison, a southern gent with a pencil-thin moustache arching over a blindingly white smile.

“We are gonna work together for three years to get everything in perfect order! An I promise, I won’t have to see ya more than once a month.”

The health industry had officially declared me fair game, easy prey

When the doctor had exited in a swoosh of fluttering white to “work with” the next patient, the nurse leant over as if in deep confidence and added: “You are SOOO lucky to be working with Dr Harrison! He is the beeeast!”, making “best” sound like “beast”.

I never returned after my root canal operation. I chose to become a dental fugitive, hounded every six weeks by increasingly urgent letters reminding me of the doctor’s vision and my empty promises. I am certain that my mouth is on a blacklist somewhere.

A rub-on gel could be the first over-the-counter treatment for impotency, a company has announced.

It is being developed by Futura Medical in collaboration with arginina tadalafil

The treatment, called MED2002, is expected to go into clinical trials at the end of 2006.
